Driving in Europe from or in the UK from 1 January 2021
As the UK reaches the end of the Brexit Transition Period, from 1 January 2021 customers may encounter some changes to renting a vehicle with Hertz.
Driving Licence Requirements
Customers renting on a UK driver’s licence and driving in the EEA and Switzerland do not need an international driving permit (IDP) to rent a vehicle from 1 January 2021. Customers renting on a EEA or Swiss driver’s licence and driving in the UK are able to continue drive in the UK. You do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP). For further government guidance see here.
Personal Insurance
Due to certain changes in the legal regime that will come into effect as of 1 January 2021 applicable to insurance provision in the UK, Hertz will no longer be able to offer the Personal Insurance product to customers renting in the UK.
Driving from the UK to Europe
We will not allow our UK registered vehicles to be taken outside the UK, except if renting a vehicle in Northern Ireland and driving it to the Republic of Ireland and vice versa. This will only be allowed with our express prior permission, issuance of a VE103B certificate and, if the drop off and pick up location are different, subject to a one-way fee.
Driving from Europe to the UK
We will also not allow vehicles rented in other European countries to be taken into the UK.
If we have reason to believe that that you have taken our vehicle outside/into the UK without the right to do so, this will constitute a breach of our rental terms and your insurance and waiver products will be void and no longer protect you. You will also be charged £1,980/€2,317 to recover the costs generated by the repatriation of the vehicle.
